Iftar: Muslims, Christians and Jewish together for Ramadan

July 9th, 2015

It is well known that in the aftermaths of 9/11 a tragic fracture between Islam and Western society developed, not only in the United States, but in Europe, too. Suddenly, a mood of fear and mistrust spread to those who had been living for years in our countries, working, studying, and sending their children to our schools. Since there were concerns among their Muslim friends, Community of Sant’Egidio in cooperation with the Forum of Religions in Milan, decided to take actions by fostering encounter, mutual knowledge and friendship, starting from one of the most meaningful moments in the Islamic religion: the end of fasting during the Holy month of Ramadan.

Since 2002, every year, on the end of fasting, Sant’Egidio and Forum has used to invite all the representatives from the main Islamic communities in Milan to gather and prey. In a place nearby but separated, Christians gather for their prayers, too. Then, Christians and representatives of the Jewish community join Muslims to end the fasting with a dinner with dishes from the Arabic and other traditions. At the end of the event, there are interventions of the most important representatives of each community.
